Caps emerge from pack to take provincial junior crown

St. John’s wins playoff tiebreaker against Corner Brook, then beats host Mount Pearl in final

The St. John’s Capitals doubled the homestandi­ng Mount Pearl Blazers 10-5 to win the Molson provincial junior baseball championsh­ip Sunday.

At Smallwood Drive Ball Park, the Caps went through the five-team tournament 5-1.

Sunday’s play began with Mount Pearl defeating C.B.S. Raiders 8-2, and defending champion Corner Brook Barons outscoring C.B.N. Bulldogs 15-12 to set up a three-way tie for first place.

The Caps, Blazers and Barons were all 3-1 in the round-robin.

A tiebreaker game between St. John’s and Corner Brook, won 2-0 by St. John’s on a nohitter by Ryan Morgan, advanced the Caps to the final against the host squad.

Andrew Paul claimed the top batter award, while Morgan, after pitching that no-no in the tiebreaker, claimed both top pitcher and MVP honours.
