Ryan Morgan pitched six strong innings and Andrew Paul scored two runs as the visiting St. John’s Capitals defeated the Corner Brook Barons 5-2 Sunday at Jubilee Field to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven provincial senior baseball championship.

The remainder of the series will be played next weekend at St. Pat’s Ball Park in St. John’s, with Games 4 and 5 set for Saturday. Games 6 and 7, if necessary, would go next Sunday.

St. John’s has won 16 of the last 17 all-newfoundland titles, their latest championship coming last year when they swept Corner Brook. However, it was the Barons who opened the 2017 series with a win, as pick-up pitcher A.J. Whiffen (4W, 5K) threw a five-hitter and allowed just one earned run in Corner Brook’s 5-2 victory in Saturday’s Game 1 at Jubilee Field.

Trevor Clarke homered for the Caps and scored both St. John’s runs.

Greg Barry (5H, 2K) took the loss.

In Game 2, Capitals starter Dan Connors and Morgan combined on a four-hit shutout as St. John’s knotted the series with a 3-0 victory.

Connors (1W, 5K) went six innings for the win over Sean Anderson. Morgan struck out two in pitching a hitless final inning.

Catcher Scott Stockley had two hits and drove in two runs for the Capitals.

On Sunday, it was Matt Murphy getting the save with one inning of work in relief of Morgan, who battled his way to the win, giving up two runs on five walks and seven hits. He struck out three.

Teen lefty Matt Colbourne (4W, 5K) started and worked into the sixth inning for the Barons. He was tagged with the loss after being charged with three runs.

Dylan Mckenzie of the Caps, and Darren Colbourne and Dave Parsons of the Barons each had two hits in Game 3.
