Memorial pendant found on sidewalk in Kilbride

A silver metal cross pendant that appears to contain the ashes of a loved one was found on Fahey Street in Kilbride on Thursday evening.

Sherry St. John, who found the pendant, says she was out for a walk with her grandson when they spotted it on the sidewalk. She put it in her purse and “didn’t think anything of it” until she was showing it to some neighbours the following day who believed it could be a pendant designed to hold ashes.

St. John posted a photo of the pendant on Facebook on Friday evening that has been shared 289 times. A neighbor also posted an ad on Kijiji hoping to find the owner of the cross.

The cross-shaped pendant has hearts engraved on it and can be opened, revealing a small ball that unscrews and could possibly be filled with ashes. It has no noticeable markings or engravings.

Barret’s Funeral Homes Ltd., Carnell’s Funeral Home and Caul’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, all in St. John’s, were unable to identify the pendant as one they sell or filled. Things Engraved and Nelson Monuments, the primary manufacturers of memorial pendants for ashes in the area, do not recognize the pendant as one of theirs.

St. John plans to turn the pendant in to the police in a few days time if the owner is not found. Meanwhile, she says, “it’s in safe hands now.”

The owner of the pendant can retrieve it by calling 709-746-5523.
