BMW X3: Redesigned and Improved

On sale in its current form since the 2011 model year, the second-generation X3 was due for a redesign, and the German manufacturer recently revealed all the details on the upcoming third generation that will be available in Canada before the end of the year. Well, almost all the details.

Two versions of the X3 will be on offer for 2018. The X3 xdrive30i is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four that develops 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It will replace the current xdrive28i variant and according to BMW, it can zip from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds.

The xdrive35i will be replaced by a new M Performance trim called the X3 M40i, which gets a turbocharged, 3.0-litre inline-six that belts out 355 hp and 369 lb.-ft.

This new performance-oriented X3 includes a launch control system and will get to 100 km/h from a standstill in just 4.8 seconds. The BMW X4 M40i has been on the market for a couple of years now, so an M40i version of the X3 was expected.

Both trims are also equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission as well as – obviously – an all-wheel drivetrain, although the M40i’s setup will be more rear-wheel biased. Ground clearance is unchanged at 203 millimetres, while the company claims the new-generation SUV can ford a stream of up to 500 mm, enhancing its off-road prowess.

The X3 M40i benefits from a firmer M Sport suspension, while an Adaptive M Sport suspension is optional. It also gets M Sport brakes with bluepainted brake callipers and standard Variable sport steering. The latter is available on the X3 xdrive30i, in addition to optional and driver-configurable Dynamic Damper Control.

Other improvements include optional ventilated front seats, a longer panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control and individually adjustable rear seatbacks. Cargo space is unchanged at 550 litres with the rear seats upright and 1600 with the seatbacks folded down, and the 2018 BMW X3 features a factory-installed trailer hitch. Towing capacity is rated at up to 4400 lbs. (2000 kg) with trailer brakes.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but the new X3 will hit BMW dealerships in November 2017.
