The images spread like wildfire on social media.

A colourfully striped snake slithering across the road towards water sparked thousands of people to share it and dozens of people to comment.

The photo and video were posted Monday on Facebook by Danielle Smith of Paradise, who wrote on her status, “So this was just crossing the road by Topsail Pond … It’s now swimming in the pond! Someone’s pet, perhaps? Please share.”

She followed it with a snake emoji.

In just a few hours, her status was shared more than 2,000 times.

Comments to her post included people expressing shock and sympathy.

“Never leaving the house again!” one woman wrote.

“That is crazy,” another woman said.

“Yikes! What a fright that would give someone!” another commented.

Another woman said, “Sin, he looks so sweet.”

Some people seemed to have knowledge about the type of snake, noting it was either a corn snake or milk snake, which are harmless common pets.

Smith later updated her status to add, “I have been told that the snake is, in fact, a popular colour variant of some kind of milksnake (‘harmless’). It won’t last long outside/in the water. Hopefully someone with experience with snakes can catch him! The poor thing is definitely lost and confused! Still hoping to locate its owner. Thanks for sharing!!”
