Just last week Executive Director of the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland (SPAN), Elaine Balsom, told The Telegram that donations were lacking for this year’s Back to School Project.

“Newfound Cabs really just came to the rescue for us. We were really struggling to figure out how we were going to be able to help 200 children, now we’ve easily surpassed that.” Elaine Balsom, executive director of the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland

Monday afternoon, Newfound Cabs fixed that problem by donating 100 book bags and supplies to SPAN’S Back to School Project.

“Newfound Cabs really just came to the rescue for us,” said Balsom. “We were really struggling to figure out how we were going to be able to help 200 children, now we’ve easily surpassed that.”

“We don’t choose one particular charity,” said manager of Newfound Cabs, Derek Hayter. “We go wherever the need in the community is at the time. We take a lot in from the community, so we try to give back as often as we can.”

Balsom told The Telegram SPAN now has the ability to start concentrating on the children who were placed on their waitlist.

Newfound Cabs also put a $5 discount voucher in every book bag they donated.

“These vouchers mean a lot,” said Balsom. “On a rainy day when a child is walking home, their parent can take this voucher and use it towards the cost.”

“It’s all about making life more cost effective for single parent families.”
