First look at local film ‘Crown and Anchor’ goes online
It’s a gritty tale of hard cases and criminals, dealing with family and dealing with the past — and it’s ready to be released to the world.
“Crown and Anchor” is a film by Matt Wells, Mike Rowe and Andrew Rowe, set in St. John’s and shot in the capital city last fall.
It’s the story of two cousins: James Downey (Mike) and Danny Power (Matt), who grew up together. James moved away from Newfoundland and become a cop; Danny stayed in St. John’s. Circumstances force them back together and see them haunted by their past.
Matt and Mike are members of now-retired local band Bucket Truck who turned from music to acting; Matt’s known for hosting Muchmusic shows like “Going Coastal” and “Where You At, Baby?” while Mike’s roles include DC Comics villain Deadshot in CW’S “Arrow” and Ninjak in the “Ninjak Vs. The Valiant Universe” webseries.
Andrew is an award-winning filmmaker whose short projects include “Vehicular Romanticide” and “Sleepy Stories.” “Crown and Anchor” is his feature-length debut.
“We knew we were making an edgy, kind of punk-rock movie that was probably going to live outside the mainstream; not just the subject matter and directing style, but also the with the soundtrack,” Mike tells The Telegram. “So far, the way we’re being embraced by international film festivals has made us feel great about sticking to our instincts and taking an unconventional approach.
“We can’t wait for people to see this film that we made in our hometown of St. John’s and we’re pumped that we’ll be announcing our world premiere on our website, www.crownandanchorfilm.com, in the coming weeks.”
