Mailbox inaccessible many times

-

My community mailbox is located on 10 Clancey Dr. in St. John’s. I live on Forest Road. My issue is that my mailbox has limited access from May to the end of the first week in August due to the civic holiday of Regatta Day. No mail is delivered on Regatta Day as there is no vehicle access on this day.

Clancey Drive is a very popular area where people walk the lake, row, etc., with limited parking. My mailbox is in a parking spot where cars park and many times are backed up so close you cannot open it. It’s happened to me three times so far. When I do pick up my mail, I have to stop in the driving lane of the road and put on emergency lights because there is nowhere to pull in. I have also asked the city councillor in my area about placing a concrete block in front to stop cars from parking in front. I have received a response, but no action has been taken.

I previously sent a message online to Canada Post, which committed to respond by July 7. On July 11 I still had not heard, so I called and spoke with someone who, after having to explain again, indicated there was a message on file indicating “the committee agreed the mailbox was put in the correct spot.” I guess I had to call to find out the response.

Obviously the “committee” does not live in Newfoundland and Labrador and has not heard of Regatta Day, which is the oldest sporting event in North America (200 years old in 2018).

There has to be a better place for this mailbox! Please, please find it.
