The City of St. John’s announced another traffic pilot project for streets in the downtown area Wednesday, this time on Duckworth Street, Plymouth Road and Quidi Vidi Road.

The area will be reconfigured to improve traffic flow and make it safer for pedestrians, the city stated in a news release. Temporary changes will be implemented Sept. 5-6.

“This location was identified as a candidate for a pilot project because of many concerns that have been raised by the public about the area as a confusing and hazardous location,” the city said.

Part of Duckworth Street, between Cavendish Square and Quidi Vidi Road, will become a one-way street, with traffic moving toward Signal Hill.

Plymouth Road will also become one-way between Quidi Vidi Road and Cavendish Square, with traffic moving toward downtown.

A section of Quidi Vidi Road will become one-way, too. Between Duckworth and Plymouth, traffic will only be allowed to travel toward Quidi Vidi Village.

Traffic islands and signage to help guide drivers will be installed.

Cook’s Hill will be highlighted as a turnaround spot, and another turnaround will be added at Duckworth and Plymouth.

The city says these changes will be effective until mid-autumn. Before snowclearing season begins, current conditions will be back in place.

A survey will be circulated near the project’s end to see what the public thinks of the traffic changes.

The city announced another downtown traffic pilot project, focusing on Church Hill, Queen’s Road and Veterans’ Square, last week.
