Craig Scott to be acclaimed as Torbay mayor

-

Craig Scott will be the next mayor of Torbay.

Currently sitting as a councillor in the Northeast Avalon town, Scott was the only one to put his name on the ballot for mayor in next month’s election. Scott thanked his wife, Laureen, and his children, Ryan and Kathleen, along with all his supporters in a Facebook post Tuesday night. He said it is humbling and exciting to learn he’ll become the next mayor.

“It is bittersweet that I didn’t have an opponent, but I figure there are two reasons for that. Either nobody else wanted the job or people felt I was a person they could put their trust and confidence in. I think I will choose to believe the second,” he wrote.

“That being said, I am only one person. I am no more important than or above any other member of council. We need to have a great team if we hope to keep our town going in the right direction. “Please take this election seriously and help elect that team. There are many worthy candidates who have chosen to offer themselves for council. I am looking forward to working with whoever the voters in the town of Torbay choose on September 26.”

Several Torbay residents have put their names forward for council: Trina Appleby, Geoff Gallant, Ward Gosse, Justin Martin, Tony Pollard, Peggy Roche, Mary Thornegosse, Brian Whitty and Jason Whitty. Advance polling takes place at the town hall Sept. 12 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and election day is Sept. 26.
