All lanes will be open

NBT Challenge at Plaza Bowl will involve 100 competitors chasing down $10,000 in prizes

What’s been dubbed the largest-five pin tournament in Newfoundland and Labrador bowling history gets rolling in St. John’s in 10 days time, and the competition at the NBT Challenge presented by Bodyquest will be wide open according to one of the chief organizers.

“This is the only true open bowling tournament of its kind in Newfoundland,” said Newfoundland Bowling Tour (NBT) co-founder Shane Chafe.

“Anyone can bowl. We don’t have age groups, gender separation, classes, regions or anything like that. Everyone is welcome to show up and bowl … the top male bowlers versus the top ladies versus the top youth and so on.

“It’s the purest form of sporting competition and we are really excited about this event.”

Over 100 bowlers are set compete Sept, 9-10 9 at Plaza Bowl in St. John’s, where bowlers will compete in singles and team events for a total of $10,000 in cash prizes.

Chafe, the reigning national masters men’s singles champion, is just one of many current and past Canadian title-holders

who will take to the lanes at the vent.

Senior girls youth national champion Courtney Lucas is slated to bow, as are six-time

national champion Jennifer Baker, local bowling legends Bob Osborne and Phil Foley and several members of the provincial masters ladies team that won the 2017 national championship in Regina in July.

Melissa Manor, one of the members of that team, is also co-founder of the NBT, which she says was established to increase competitive play locally after seeing the success of the cash tour in Western Canada.

“The goal of our tour is to provide bowlers in Newfoundland with additional opportunities to play in a competitive setting,” says Manor. “The response within the province has been overwhelming and we have even attracted bowlers from elsewhere in Atlantic Canada”.
