It is with broken hearts and great sadness that the Steckley and Furlong families say goodbye to our beautiful and gracious Carol. Carol passed away on September 11, 2017 at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre surrounded by her loving family. Carol was a devoted, loving and treasured mom, wife, sister, aunt and friend. She is predeceased by her loving parents Evelyn (2014) and John (2006), her best friend and mother-in-law Pauline (2003) and her grandmother Mabel (1999) whom she adored. Carol enrolled in the Canadian Forces following graduation from the General Hospital School of Nursing. As a Commissioned Officer in the Canadian Forces Medical Branch, she lived an adventurous and challenging life that she truly embraced for twenty years. She served as a Flight Nurse during her first ten years of military service, followed by advanced training and leadership opportunities. During her military career she was selected under the University Training Plan for Officers to attend the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario and Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She served at Canadian Forces Bases Trenton, Kingston, London, and Borden, Ontario, and Shearwater and Halifax, Nova Scotia and Cold Lake, Alberta. Following her retirement from the Canadian Forces at CFB Borden, ON, Carol transferred to the Federal Public Service and continued to work for the Canadian Forces Health Services as a Nurse Case Manager. Carol was highly regarded and passionate in her role, insuring ill and injured members of the Canadian Forces were engaged in services prior to transitioning from the military. In 2007 she transferred to 26 Canadian Forces Health Services, Canadian Forces Station St John's, to be closer to her family. Carol's family was her greatest priority. She was an amazing partner to her husband Dwayne and loving mom to her son Michael whom she was immensely proud off. She was a caring, supportive, wonderful, wise, patient, gentle, nurturing mom but most of all his dearly loved generous friend. Carol was an avid traveller and her passions were family summer travels to Europe, the hills of Tuscany, the city of London, visiting her friends, time with her Cavalier King Charles, Spaniels Sophie and Oreo, listening to and attending Leonard Cohen concerts, Italian cuisine, gardening, camping and family gatherings with her sisters and brothers. Carol left a lifetime of treasured memories that made us all feel so very special in her life. She will be dearly missed and forever loved by her husband Dwayne, her precious and dearly loved son Michael, sisters: Lynn (Jerry Flaherty) and Diane (Pat Hort), brothers: John (Linda) and Don (Ann Marie), brothers-in-law: Noel (Li) and Ken (Pat) Calgary, Alberta and nieces and nephews: Jonathon and Hillary Furlong, Connor Flaherty, Michael and Kimberley Hort, Collyn and Kristen Steckley, as well as a large circle of friends, relatives and work colleagues. She will also be missed by her special professional work colleagues at the Integrative Personnel Support Center CFS St John's, Veteran Affairs Canada and the Canadian Forces National Case Management Team, whom she always held in high regard as an amazing supportive collaborative team. Carol will also be missed by her dearest and closest friends whom she considered her extended military family who were always there for support throughout her entire military career: Karen Eaton, Toronto; Janes Estabrooks, Ottawa; Carolann and Dave Didsbury, Fredricton NB; Tim and Renee Fearrey, Lucasville QC; Cathy and Rino Levesque, Halifax NS; Deb and Greg Merrill, Midhurst ON; Alice and Normand Perron, Chambly, QC and Joanne Reid Halifax, NS. A special heartfelt thank you is extended to Dr. Cynthia Fontaine for her personable, kind and sincere care to our dear Carol. Carol's wishes were that everyone embrace life and remember the laughter and fond times together to keep her memory alive. In keeping with Carol's wishes, a funeral Mass will be held from Holy Trinity Parish, Torbay on Friday, September 15, 2017 at 10 a.m. Donations in Carol's memory may be made to Wounded Warriors Canada at https://woundedwarriors.ca.
