Bard in the bays
Exhibition looks at Shakespeare’s history in N.L.
Since the 19th century, Shakespeare’s works have been performed in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The plays have been put off in festivals and theatres across the province since.
To celebrate that history, an exhibition titled “Brave New Worlds” will run from mid-september to mid-october in the Queen Elizabeth II Library at Memorial University and early October in the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre.
Costumes, posters, photographs, props and books — all of which are connected to these performances — will be on display. “Brave New Worlds” is a curated by Rob Ormsby of Memorial’s department of English.
It is being done in partnership with the Queen Elizabeth II Library, Cupids’ Perchance Theatre, the St. John’ s Arts and Culture Centre and the Newfoundland Quarterly, and explores the history of Shakespeare in this province.
A symposium will feature presenters such as Andy Jones, Greg Malone, Danielle Irvine, Aiden Flynn, Jenn Deon, Steve O’connell, Pamela Morgan and Marie Sharpe, and performances by actors from Perchance Theatre, Shakespeare By the Sea and other theatre companies.
The symposium of artists, scholars and archivists will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Memorial’s St. John’s campus, in the Arts and Administration Building, Room A-1043.
