Ray Newman back in court on new charges

Ray Newman, who was acquitted in 2012 of murdering his estranged wife Chrissy Predham Newman, was back in provincial court in St. John’s Thursday, charged in connection with the beating of another woman.

Newman, 39, is facing charges of assault and of attempting to choke, strangle or suffocate the woman in an incident police allege happened Sept. 2 at a home in Paradise.

Newman is not in custody and will make his next court appearance Oct. 26.

Predham Newman was found dead in her Airport Heights apartment in late January 2007. Her throat had been cut.

Newman was charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death. During his trial, Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court Justice James Adams ruled to exclude a significant amount of evidence presented by the police, saying police erred by not reading Newman his rights until 30 minutes into their interview with him, and after he had already told them he had been at Predham Newman’s apartment the day she died. As a result, Newman’s charter rights had been violated, Adams ruled.

Newman was acquitted and the Crown appealed Adams’ dismissal of evidence, but the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal did not overturn the decision. The Crown opted against bringing an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
