Perfect positioning: Memorial women alone in first place’
Lady Hawks 4-0 in early-season AUS play; MUN men 3-1 after weekend split in Halifax
The Memorial Sea-hawks are the only team with a perfect record in the early goings of the 2017 Atlantic University Sport women’s soccer season, improving to 4-0 with a weekend sweep in Halifax.
Sunday, the Sea-hawks got a goal from Jessie Noseworthy in the 80th minute, and shutout goaltending from Sydney Walsh to beat Dalhousie Tigers 1-0 at Wickwire Field.
That win came on the heels of a 3-1 decision Saturday over Saint Mary’s Huskies at Huskies Stadium.
Memorial’s men’s squad managed a split over the weekend, beating the Huskies 1-0 Saturday before dropping a 2-1 decision Sunday to the Tigers.
The men’s Sea-hawks squad is 3-1.
Walsh, a freshman, stopped 13 shots Sunday for the clean sheet, her third shutout in four games this year.
The goal was Noseworthy’s third on the weekend. She scored twice against Saint Mary’s. Nicole Torraville had the other Memorial goal against Saint Mary’s.
The Lady Birds are in Nova Scotia again next weekend, playing Cape Breton Saturday in Sydney, and St. Francis Xavier Sunday in Antigonish, N.S.
The Capers (3-0) and Xwomen (3-0-1) are also unbeaten.
The Tigers’ game-winning goal in the men’s game Sunday came on a penalty kick in the 59th minute by Freddy Bekkers.
Tyler Forsey opened scoring for the Sea-hawks at 18 minutes. Forsey has four goals in four games.
Saturday, it was Forsey in the 47th minute providing all the scoring MUN needed. Braedan Sheppard made four stops for the shutout.
Memorial’s men’s team is also in Sydney and Antigonish next weekend for games against unbeaten Cape Breton and St. FX.
The X-men are 4-0 and the Capers are 2-0-1.
