Placentia’s Collins win Targa Newfoundland’s Open division
Father and son also claim titles, but in separate sections
A Newfoundlander best know for his exploits in stock car racing and a father and son competing in separate divisions were among the winners as the five-day 2017 Targa Newfoundland concluded over the weekend with final stages in Brigus.
Josh Collins, competing with Matt Collins (also of Placentia, but no relation), won the Open division in a 1995 Acura Integra, ahead of Mark Rittenhouse of Ontario and Mark Laitenberger of New York (2008 Mitsubishi Evo), and Richard Clark and Andrew Prill of the United Kingdom(2003 Subaru Impreza.)
Josh Collins, 31, is the first Newfoundlander to compete in the NASCAR’S Canadian Tire series.
In Grand Touring division, first place went to the Hume Team Media Inc. team of John
Hume Sr. and Christina Kroner of Ontario, in a 2013 MINI GP. Meanwhile another Hume
Media Inc. entry, this one driven by John Hume Jr. of Ontario and Justin Crant of Newfoundland won the Modern division in their 2004 BMW M3.
In Grand Touring. second place was claimed by Craig Macmullen of Nova Scotia and David Jenkins of Ontario ( 2013 MINI Countryman), ahead of third-place finishers brothers Paul and Mark Dennis of Ontario (2017 Subaru BRZ).
In the Open division, Mike Humphreys and Rahim Kahn of Switzerland (2004 Porsche GT3 RS) was second, with another Hume Media Inc. entry, that of Jon Riddell and Briar de Lange of Ontario third in their 2002 BMW M3
In Classic division, first place went to Jack Rogers and C.J. Strupp of Indiana in their 1965 Ford Mustang. Taking second was Bryan Bursey of Texas and Martin Cadieux of Quebec (1991 Mazda Miata), with Michael Wilson of New York and John Stanescu of New Jersey (1990 Ford Mustang) finishing third.
