Marystown in shock after two people found dead

- BY COLIN FARRELL

A weekend incident that has left a man and woman dead has shocked the town of Marystown.

Sgt. Richard Marshall of the RCMP’S ‘B’ division major crimes unit confirmed that the body of an 18-year-old female was found in a home on Mcgettigan Boulevard.

“The female was located deceased in the residence at the time the RCMP responded,” he said. “So Saturday, noon approximately.”

Marshall said police have identified the woman. They are not releasing that information at this time, however.

The body of a 37-year-old man, identified by police as Jeff Kilfoy of Marystown, was found in a wooded area of Mooring Cove area around 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Marshall said police are working to determine the cause of the deaths.

“That will be part of the consultation

with the medical examiner,” he said.

Next of kin for both people

have been contacted, Marshall said.

On Saturday, armed officers

could be seen at the home. Residents from a multi-unit building next to the house were escorted from their homes by police for what they were told were safety reasons.

The RCMP later issued a news release saying police were looking to speak with Kilfoy, and advised the public not to approach him, as he was possibly armed and dangerous.

Natasha Baker, a resident of the building next door, commented to The Southern Gazette through social media about the evacuation.

“It felt scary knowing that we weren’t safe in our home,” Baker said. “When we left Saturday, we only had a few minutes to leave. The police stayed with us until we left the driveway. That day we left with nothing.”

Approximately 12 people were in the adjacent building when it was evacuated.

Baker said she never thought she would experience anything like this in Marystown.

“That’s the scary part, to know we were right beside it when it all happened.”
