Seeking peace bond

Cortney Lake’s mother appeared in provincial court in St. John’s Tuesday afternoon, hoping to get a peace bond against Cortney’s ex-boyfriend Philip Steven Smith.
Lisa Lake was in the courtroom, but Smith was a no-show when judge David Orr called the case, and Orr realized when he looked through the file that Smith hadn’t been served with a summons to attend.
Orr set the matter over to Oct. 10, to allow sheriff’s officers two more weeks to give Smith his papers in person.
Smith, 25, was the last person seen with Cortney Lake, 24, before she disappeared June 7. Police believe the mother of one was murdered.
Smith has acknowledged picking Cortney up in his truck on Michener Avenue that evening, a moment that was caught on another driver’s dash cam.
Earlier that day, Smith had pleaded guilty to a range of charges, some involving Lake, and was under a court order to not contact her. He was arrested for breaching that order and released on conditions, but broke one of them — an order to not consume alcohol — and was arrested again two weeks later.
He was sentenced to three months in custody, with credit given for time already served, and finished his sentence at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary in late August.
Smith is already under an order from the court to have no contact with Lisa Lake and other Lake family members.
