“Taken too soon from us all,” begins a statement issued by the family of Ryanna Grywacheski, whose body was discovered in a basement apartment in a home in Marystown Saturday.

The 18-year-old, originally from Saskatchewan, was found dead in what has been ruled by police as a murder-suicide. According to the RCMP, she was murdered by 37-year-old Jeff Kilfoy of Marystown, with whom she was in a relationship. According to a statement issued to The Southern Gazette on behalf of the family by Grywacheski’s aunt, Cornelia Behr, “there are not enough words to describe Ryanna.” “Beautiful, loving and caring. A sweet young woman, daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and cousin.” Behr said her niece was always smiling and willing to lend a helping hand to those who needed it. Grywacheski is described as a talented and creative artist who was “passionate about anything she set her mind to.”

She loved animals, as well as cooking and baking, and aspired to become a welder, her aunt said.

Behr said that in 2013, her niece was hit by a car while she was walking to school.

“After months of rehabilitation she struggled with depression,” she said via email.

She added that, like many people, Grywacheski struggled to find her own path.

“But she was unique and never afraid to be herself,” Behr wrote.

“She was strong, and overcame many obstacles in the short time she had with us all.”

Grywacheski came from a large family, with Ukrainian and Polish roots on her mother’s side and Irish, Scottish and Cree on her father’s.

“She had many family and friends of different ethnicities and never discriminated against anyone,” Behr wrote.

“She honestly had a heart of gold. She will be greatly missed by us all.”
