Two-vehicle moose collision sends one person to hospital

- telegram@thetelegram.com

A moose collision on the Outer Ring Road involving two vehicles sent one person to hospital Wednesday night.

The collision happened when one car struck a moose calf, and a second vehicle slammed into the rear end of the first car as it came to a stop, driving that car into a ditch. The driver of the first car was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered serious, while the occupant of the second vehicle was unharmed.

Emergency officials had to deal with the cow that was wandering close by looking for its calf. The cow eventually crossed the highway. Debris from the collision was spread over the two lanes of highway and only one lane was left open for traffic to travel through.

Emergency officials on the scene credited seatbelts and airbags for the low level of injuries to the vehicles’ occupants, but also commented on the fact that drivers refused to reduce their speed in the area as they dealt with the incident.
