2017 Musicnl Week has begun … and we’ve got your guide to the nominees and the best events
2017 Musicnl Week has officially started in St. John’s and it’s a big one, with the province’s music industry association celebrating its 25 years in style.
Planning hasn’t come without its hiccups — including a fire last week at the newly renovated Majestic Theatre, where a number of Musicnl Weeks events had been scheduled — but the stages are set to showcase some of the best the province’s music scene has to offer.
Alongside a number of delegate-only showcases, workshops, panels and other events (including the attendance of 25 export buyers from around North America and the U.K., brought in by Musicnl as part of a new export development program to work with local artists), there’s a veritable plethora of public events, from trad music to heavy metal. Of course, Musicnl Week will wrap up with the annual awards gala, hosted this year by Alan Doyle at the St. John’s Convention Centre. Want to know who’s nominated? “This year will be the biggest and most memorable Musicnl Week to date,” executive director Glenda Tulk has said.
Here’s your guide to the public shows happening in St. John’s over the next four days:
Thursday, Oct. 12
• Nickel Night at the Rockhouse, 9pm-2am. $10
A showcase of artists who have been working on music videos this year: Clare Follett, Sherry Ryan, Kellie Loder, Eastern Owl, Town House, Land of the Lakes. The Musicnl award for Nickel Music Video of the Year will be presented at this event.
Friday, Oct. 13
• O’reilly’s Musicnl Happy Hour, O’reilly’s Irish Pub, 5-6pm. Free
A mixer to warm up for the weekend. Music by Dave Penny
• The Rockhouse, 9pm-1am. $10
A pop and rock show, featuring Melanie O’brien, Rough Hands, Dave Whitty, Streel, Fairgale, Waterfront Fire and Hot x Proxy.
• Fat Cat, 9pm-1am. $10 A jazz and blue show, featuring Earle and Coffin, Hip Waders, Brianna Gosse, Chris Osmond, Beauwater and Ouroboros. The Musicnl award for Jazz/blues Recording of the Year will be presented at this event.
• The Loud Stage, Club One. $10
Prepare yourself for some heavy rock, featuring Faster Than Felix, The Analog Age, The Combine, Cabbages and Kings and Category VI.
• The Ship, 10pm-1am. $10
Some of the province’s best folk talent, including Rachel Cousins, Quote the Raven, Victoria and the Lyricist, Rube and Rake, Adam Baxter and The Kubasonics.
Saturday, Oct. 14
• Musicnl Gospel Showcase, Cochrane Centre, 2-4pm. $15 plus tax.
A curation of some great local gospel music, with Off the Cuff Community Chorus, Carolina East, Blair Lane, The Secrets and Michelle Noftall, with accompaniment by Sandy Morris and Craig Young.
• The Ship, 9pm-1am. $10 With performances by Bridget Swift and Dahlia Waller, Christian Howse, Gary and Whit, The Heavy Horses, Brad Fillatre, Carolina East and The
Secrets.
• The Fat Cat, 9pm-1am. $10 A trad music show, featuring Bev Allen, Tanglecove, Dave Penny, Atlantic Union, Rosemary Lawton, Cordeen and Rum Ragged.
• The Rockhouse, 9pm-1am. $10
A night of alternative music with Lucas Hanrahan, Hatch Harnett, Another North, Young Manics, Carlyle and Soap Opera.
• Club One, 10pm-3am $10 Electronic and hip-hop show with artists from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia: Rozalind Macphail, Black Market Hard Tack, It Could Be Franky, JYAY, Lee Fitz, Jay Mayne with Dwayne “DJ Slim” Marcial and Quake Matthews.
Sunday, Oct. 15
• Songwriters’ Circle: Stars and Legends, Cochrane Centre, 2-4pm $25 plus tax
Engaging the audience with stories and songs will be Denis Parker, Shirley Montague, Steve Maloney, Janet Cull, Mary Barry and Chris Ledrew
• The 2017 Musicnl Awards show, St. John’s Convention Centre. $45 plus tax
Host Alan Doyle will bring Musicnl Week to a close with the awards gala. The remainder of this year’s awards will be presented, interspersed with performances by some of your favourites: Amelia Curran, Cordeen, Denis Parker, Fortunate Ones, Janet Cull, JYAY, Shanneyganock, Steve Maloney, The Kubasonics, The Novaks, The Once.
