Coastal Habitat project funded
Officials were on hand at the Marine Base in Holyrood Wednesday over the noon hour for a funding announcement of just over $3 million for the Canadian World Wildlife Fund (Wwf-canada) Coastal Habitat Project for the province. The multi-year project will support Wwf-canada and nine partner organizations in monitoring and restoring coastal habitats for the continued development of an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management by leveraging traditional knowledge, scientific research, and citizen science. Planned project activities include capelin habitat modelling and restoration in Placentia Bay and the Bay of Islands, and removal of obstacles to fish passage for Atlantic salmon and Arctic char in Labrador. Through community-based monitoring and rehabilitation teams, these activities will build local capacity to steward the aquatic resources that are important to local economies. Here Jim Howell, vice-president of the Nunatukavut Community Council speaks as Wwf-canada President and CEO David Miller, looks on.
