Softball Canada award-winners from this province

- Athlete Colin Abbott of Portugal Cove-st. Phillips and official Randy Soulier of St. John’s will be inducted into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame next month.

Three Newfoundla­nders are among Softball Canada’s award winners for 2017, and will be honoured during the organizati­on’s Hall of Fame banquet and awards ceremony next month in St. John’s.

The awards night is being held in conjunctio­n with Softball Canada’s annual general meeting Nov. 9-11 in the capital city.

Paul Smith of C.B.S., Softball Newfoundla­nd and Labrador’s past president, won the Rose Hodgson volunteer of the year award. Smith has been involved with softball for over 50 years as a player, coach, umpire and organizer, founding the C.B.S. Minor Softball Associatio­n in 1993 and serving as its president until 2006. In 2009, Smith was elected to the board of Softball NL, holding a number of roles and positions, including president from 2013 to 2017.

Jordan Pomeroy of Placentia was a recipient of the Claude Deschamps Memorial Fund. Pomeroy, a first-year Memorial University student, was a standout for Newfoundla­nd at the Canada Summer Games last summer, batting .474. He also earned a spot on the Canadian roster for the 2018 world junior men’s softball championsh­ip set for Prince Albert, Sask. Mitch Stack of Petty Harbour won the Ethel Boyce Memorial Award. Stack was the starting shortstop for Newfoundla­nd at the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg, helping the team to a fifth-place finish with four home runs and nine RBIS in 11 games. He won a bronze medal with the Canadian squad at the 2016 world junior men’s championsh­ip, and was named Softball NL’S junior athlete of the year.
