Court yet to hear details of charges

As far as criminal charges go, Daniel Peter Humby of St. John’s has found himself faced with an odd variety of them within a relatively short time.

He’s alleged to have stolen from a local sex shop in June. In July, in addition to failing to show up at RNC headquarters as promised, police say he committed an indecent act in public with the intent to insult a woman, and, the same day, committed public mischief by obstructing property.

In August, police say, Humby, 20, stole from a liquor store and an Ultramar gas station, broke a number of court orders, didn’t show up for a court date and set fire to a home on Whiteway Street in St. John’s.

No one was injured in the fire, which broke out on a Friday night and caused extensive damage to the house. The address is listed as Humby’s residence on a number of his court documents, though not at the time of the fire.

Details of the alleged charges, 11 in total, have yet to come out in court. When Humby’s case was called before provincial court judge Mike Madden Wednesday morning, defence lawyer Jennifer Curran said she had just taken over the case and needed time to go over the information in the file.

Humby appeared via videolink from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary, and agreed to stay in jail without a bail hearing pending his next appearance on Nov. 2.
