Sentencing delayed for man who shot two others in 2013
Sentencing has been delayed for a man charged in connection with two shootings in St. John’s in the fall of 2013.
Lawyers had been scheduled to begin submissions on sentencing for Jason Marsh, 28, in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court Monday morning. Proceedings won’t happen now until Dec. 11.
Marsh and Christopher Shaw, 34, were charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and assault after two shootings in St. John’s four years ago.
In one shooting, a man on Boyle Street was shot in the chest with a shotgun, and in the other, a man in Williams Heights was shot three times. Both survived.
Police set up a sting after receiving a tip that Marsh was involved, putting two undercover officers from Ontario in a cell with him when he was arrested for breaching a court order. Marsh gave the officers Shaw’s phone number and they asked Shaw to get them a gun.
Thinking the officers were members of the Hells Angels, Shaw did: a .357 magnum handgun from his grandparents’ house, along with 40 round of ammunition. Shaw pleaded guilty to weapons-related charges earlier this year and was sentenced in August to 3 1/2 years in jail. He was given a year credit for the time he had already spent in custody. Charges against him relating to the shootings were dropped. Marsh — who says he acted alone in the shootings — has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, and it’s expected the attempted murder charge against him will be withdrawn.
