Nothing new to report on an Edge-english hook-up

-

There was still nothing to report Wednesday on talks between local basketball star Carl English and the St. John’s Edge, but reading between the lines, it doesn’t look promising.

The Edge want English, and the Patrick’s Cove product, who at 36 is winding down a career that saw him star for the national team and in Europe, would like to play pro at home.

But there’s the little matter of money. English would likely command more cash than the Edge — who follow the league’s salary cap of $150,000 per team — can pay out.

One thing is certain, however, coach Jeff Dunlap would like to have the former University of Hawaii star in the fold.

“I’m definitely interested, and I know he’s interested,” Dunlap said. “He has to make a smart business decision for himself. We, as an organization, have put forth our best offer, and he respects that and appreciates that. It’s all good.

“The question is: does he want to do that, or go back to the Euro league and certainly make more money? He has to decide where he’s at in his life. Do you want stay home? He’s weighing that. He has a couple of balls in the air.

“He’s a great guy, and it would be fabulous if he wanted to do this. But if he doesn’t decide to do this, I understand completely.” Newfoundland basketball star Car English has spent the last 12 years playing in professional leagues in Europe, including a stint with ALBA Berlin last season.
