Police probing woman’s death
Victim’s identity not released yet
Police are continuing their investigation after a woman’s body was found by a member of the public in an open area near O’brien’s Farm Road around 8:30 Saturday morning.
Investigators were on scene into the night Saturday searching for evidence with the assistance of the Rovers search and rescue. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was working to determine the woman’s cause of death.
The identity of the victim is being withheld, but police did tell The Telegram that the body was not that of Cortney Lake, who is the subject of a homicide investigation. She has been missing since June 7.
A bevy of police, investigators and searchers were present at the scene throughout Saturday.
Around 1:30 p.m. the RNC tweeted: Heavy police presence in the Mount Scio area of St. John’s at this hour following the discovery of a body. More information will be provided by our Media Relations Officer later this afternoon.
A later tweet said: We respectfully ask that the media respect boundaries established in the area by our Major Crime Unit as this is an active crime scene and investigators and ground search and rescue workers are competing searches of the surrounding area.
Police are asking anyone who may have noted any suspicious activity in the area in the 24-hour period before the gruesome discovery to contact them.
“Anyone who has any information pertaining to this suspicious death is asked to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-TIPS (8477). We are also interested in speaking with anybody who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area in the last 24 hours to contact us,” police said in an emailed statement Sunday.
