Cats, ’Bous split senior hockey series; junior action continues

The Grand Falls-windsor Cataracts, reigning Allan Cup Canadian senior hockey champions, kicked off their 201718 season over the weekend, splitting a pair of Central West Senior Hockey League League games with the Clarenvill­e Caribous.

At the Eastlink Events Centre in Clarenvill­e, in a rematch of last year’s league final, the Cataracts beat the defending champion Caribous 5-2 Sunday following a 3-1 Clarenvill­e win Saturday.

Sunday, the Cataracts got goals from Danny Wicks, Michael Cole, Klay Kachur, Rodi Short, with a short-handed effort, and David Byrne, into an empty net. Ryan Desrosiers and Kevin Reid replied.

Saturday night, it was Desrosiers, Mason Reid and Justin Pender scoring for the Caribous. Michael Hynes had the only Grand Falls-windsor goal. ———

Nicholas David scored three goals, and Ryan Tobin and Adam Beaumaster both drew two assists as the CBR Renegades got past the St. John’s Caps 4-1 at Twin Rinks Saturday in one of a handful of games in the St. John’s Junior Hockey League over the weekend.

The Caps managed only 19 shots on goal in that game.

Colin O’neill had two goals and two assists, and Mitch Mcgrath scored twice and assisted on another as the Mount Pearl Blades beat the homestandi­ng C.B.N. Stars 8-3 at the Bay Arena. Grant Thompson and Bobby Upshall each drew three assists for the Blades, who scored four second-period goals … At the Southern Shore Arena, the Breakers doubled the Avalon Capitals 6-3. Tyler Templeman, Shane Kavanagh, Blake Dalton, Liam Hynes, Brandon Arbour and David Fitzgerald scored for the winners …
