Wish I had been at the Pearson party
Robin Short, shame on you to put a negative spin on something so pure and positive, a simple unassuming series of videos that took social media by storm and brought joy and comfort to so many.
I know it was a slow week on the local sports scene, but I think you missed the mark with your column on Newfoundland stereotypes.
As I watched the kitchen party at Pearson Airport, I pictured myself being away, homesick, missing my family, friends and province alike; rushing through the busy airport trying to catch the next flight home for the holidays. To stumble upon this beautiful scene — the sense of pride would be overwhelming, to say the least.
Generations, both young and old together. The soothing yet familiar sounds of the accordion, guitar and the naive yet powerful voice of a young boy displaying our heritage at its finest. It just felt right, if only for a moment. It seemed everyone stopped for a minute to enjoy life and just embrace what it has to offer.
Maybe you’re right, Newfoundlanders do perpetuate their own stereotypes: putting a positive spin on a bad situation, coming together as we always do regardless of age, gender or class, and being proud of who we are, wherever we are.
I would have loved to be delayed at Pearson that day, waiting for a flight home, and I know I’m not the only one.
Stick to sports, Robin. It’s what you do best. Michael Reddy St. John’s
