Season 2 Singnl winners to be crowned Sunday night
`Every single one of them as a personal sense of music and song,’ says Zack Werner
The Singnl competition has become a home for performers who break the mold of people’s expectations, says Zack Werner.
As the second season of the province-wide singing contest wraps up with the finale round Sunday night, Werner — who established the contest in partnership with The Telegram — feels the remaining participants are a good mix of talented, hard-working, driven singers, each with their own unique gifts.
Six singers have made it to the finale in each of two categories.
Julianna Tschaja of Portugal Cove-st. Phillip’s, Haley Peddle of Hodge’s Cove, Meghan Breen of Mount Pearl, Rachel Waddleton of Mount Pearl, Jesse Lahey of St. John’s and T.J. Hogan of St. John’s will perform in the youth category (ages eight to 14), while Fogo’s Mike Penton, Ally Noseworthy of Spaniard’s Bay, Evelyn Ryan of C.B.S., and Tiffany Richards, Rebecca Mercer and Emily Ball of St. John’s will compete in the adult category, for ages 15 and up.
“The talent on the youth side has been really exciting, especially seeing growth in those who came back from last season,” says Werner, who’s a musician, entertainment lawyer, founder of Venus Records and former “Canadian Idol” judge.
“It makes me understand how much an opportunity like Singnl can offer as part of the journey young people undertake when they commit to music
“On the adult side, I’m thrilled to have such a unique mix of artistic singers. Every single one of them has a personal sense of music and song.”
The second season of Singnl started with close to a hundred singers, whittled down through an audition process and weekly competitions held at the Bella Vista in St. John’s.
As with the previous rounds, the finale will be broadcast live on The Telegram’s Facebook page. This time, however, the public will have a chance to have their say: the winner in each category will be crowned based on votes from the live audience, a panel of judges, and the online audience.
Online viewers will be able to cast their vote with a button on www.thetelegram.com once the show begins at 6:30 Sunday evening.
For those wishing to attend the finale live, tickets are $20 at the door of the Bella Vista ($15 for seniors and students and children six and under get in free with a non-perishable food donation, which will be given to the Community Food Sharing Network). The door opens at 6 p.m.
The two winners will each receive a prize package including a two-song, professionally recorded demo; a music video produced by Up Sky Down films and featured on The Telegram website; a photoshoot with photographer Amy Fitzpatrick; a social media plan and webpage design by Worldbeat Entertainment and social media expert Mary Sorani; a onehour lifestyle and media consultation with Toronto-based fitness and lifestyle coach and former TV producer Caleigh Rykiss; a one-hour consultation with entertainment lawyer Greg Stephens, who represents a number of Canadian artists and independent recording and production companies; one month of private vocal coaching with Zack Werner and Idol School NL; showcase performances at the Rockhouse and the Black Sheep; an electronic press kit, including a live recording and an interview video shoot sponsored by Academy Canada, and a guest appearance on Rogers TV`S “NL Now.”
“The competition continues to not be about winning, but about personal challenge and community building,” says Werner. “I’m so grateful for my partnership with The Telegram, that they understand and help me send this message to the province.”
