Colonial Garage sold the Stutz
In this weekend’s column, the spotlight is on the renowned Stutz. The inspiration comes from a regular contributor to this column, Burton Janes, who sent us the picture at right. After we published that picture on November 25th., reader Jack Okeefe added to the Stutz story with a little research (see email below). There can be no doubt about it, this was one beautiful car, back 85 or more years ago.
Hi Paul:
The illustration in the November 25 issue of The Telegram on the Stutz classic car is interesting from a number of perspectives. The picture shown (above, right) is likely a Stutz Blackhawk similar to the Bearcat which I include herein (at right). I also include a picture of the 1927 Stutz Vertical Eight (below) which is a more standard type of car found in St. John’s in that era.
The Stutz was in fact available in St. John’s from Colonial Garage on Hamilton Avenue with Gordon Elton proprietor.
Just how many Stutz cars were imported by Colonial Garage is not known, but that would make interesting history.
The Stutz brand was getting notice when it came second in the “24 hours of Le Mans” race of 1928. They made impressive showings in Indianapolis and Daytona Beach for speed and endurance and they were also known as a very reliable automobile. Stutz cars were manufactured from 1911 to 1935.
