Man accused of attacking Trent Butt in prison denied bail
The man accused of attacking alleged child murderer Trent Butt was denied bail in provincial court in St. John’s Tuesday.
Justin Michael Jordan, who also uses the surname Hussey, had applied to be released from custody pending court dates for a number of charges. Instead, he’ll make an appearance via videolink from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary Jan. 5.
Jordan was charged with the attempted murder of Butt on June 8. He is alleged to have stabbed Butt several times with a shank while they were in the outside recreation area of the jail.
Butt was treated by prison medical staff and is reported to be recovering.
Jordan was serving a sixmonth sentence on charges
of assaulting a man with a weapon, mischief, uttering threats to police and breaching probation at the time. He has now finished serving that sentence, hence the bail hearing.
“Hands in the air for Baby Quinn,” Jordan said to reporters as he was escorted into court after he allegedly stabbed Butt.
Butt is awaiting trial for the murder of his five-year-old daughter, Quinn, last year. Butt and Quinn were found inside his burning Carbonear home April 24, 2016. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and arson in connection with the little girl’s death.
Jordan has pleaded guilty to an aggravated assault as well as breach of a court order for the attack on Butt, and the aggravated assault charge is expected to be withdrawn.
Jordan also has charges of setting off a fire alarm and assaulting another inmate stemming from unrelated incidents.
