Muskrat Falls powerhouse and intake structures ‘substantially completed’
Assembly and installation of four generating units continues
The Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project is one step closer to completion with news that prime contractor Astaldi has “substantially completed” work on the powerhouse and intake structures.
“With construction on these critical components completed, we are now installing the four generating units in the powerhouse,” Muskrat Falls Generation project manager Scott O’brien stated in a news release Tuesday.
“We are focused on delivering power to the people of the province from the Muskrat Falls generating plant in 2019.”
Astaldi started construction on the spillway, powerhouse and intake structures for the Muskrat Falls generation project in January 2014. More than 330,000 cubic metres of concrete was used and roughly 3,8000 metric tonnes of structural steel was installed for the intake structures and powerhouse.
More than 4,600 of Astaldi’s workers were Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, 600 of whom were Indigenous.
“It’s thanks to the hard work and dedication of every worker that the spillway structure was completed last year, and now this year we have substantially completed the powerhouse and intake structures,” stated Astaldi project manager Don Delarosbil.
Work continues on the assembly and installation of the four massive generating units in the powerhouse.
