Busy start to 2018 for RNC
Three charged with assault in separate incidents
New Year’s Eve and early New Year’s Day were busy for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary with assault charges laid in three separate incidents
A 29-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly used his vehicle as a weapon during an incident at 1:10 a.m. New Year’s Day on Topsail Road in Mount Pearl.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) initially responded to the call expecting a hit and run incident, but after investigating the incident further determined he purposely used his vehicle as a weapon.
In addition, he was issued a seven-day suspension for blowing a warning amount of alcohol at a roadside sobriety check, was issued a ticket for operating his vehicle with an expired driver’s license and had his vehicle impounded.
His 24-year-old female passenger was discovered to have a warrant out for her arrest.
Both individuals spent the night in lockup and were held for a court appearance.
Earlier, on New Year’s Eve, the RNC arrested a 43-year-old woman for assault and assault with a weapon following a domestic disturbance in the centre part of St. John’s around 8:30 p.m.
There were no injuries in the assault.
The woman was taken into custody pending a court appearance.
In a separate incident, a 56-year-old woman was arrested for assault with a weapon and two breaches of court orders stemming from a domestic disturbance in the city’s West End around 11 p.m. Sunday night.
Nobody was injured in the assault and the woman was held pending a court appearance.
Also Sunday, at 9:35 p.m., the RNC stopped a 46-year-old man on The Boulevard in St. John’s
The driver was operating the vehicle without valid insurance, operating with a suspended license and had failed to transfer the ownership of the vehicle.
The vehicle was impounded and the man was issued tickets and released.
