Woman accused of robbing bank with rock chooses trial by jury
Christina Chernenko, 21, appeared in provincial court Wednesday via video link from the correctional centre for women in Clarenville.
The woman accused of robbing a downtown St. John’s bank in November while armed with a rock has opted for a jury trial.
When Chernenko first appeared before a judge Nov. 27, she asked if she could proceed by speedy disposition, meaning she was prepared to enter guilty pleas.
Judge Lois Skanes advised her to speak to a lawyer first.
On Wednesday, Chernenko — who has yet to officially enter a plea — chose a trial by jury. Her preliminary inquiry is set for Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court starting April 3.
Chernenko has been charged with armed robbery, wearing a disguise with the intention to commit a crime and assault in connection with an armed robbery at Scotiabank on Water Street. Police say Chernenko entered the Scotiabank around lunchtime Nov. 24 wearing a plain white mask and held up the bank while wielding a rock.
Chernenko was allegedly able to get some cash, but dropped it on her way out of the bank. She was caught at the scene and arrested after passersby attempted to help her pick up the money, then realized what was going on.
The day before the robbery, Chernenko posted a photo on Facebook of herself wearing a plain white mask, with one finger to her lips.
