Atlantic Boychoir eager to sing with King’s
The members of Atlantic Boychoir will have the privilege of performing with the King’s Singers — and likewise, the King’s Singers will have the honour of performing with some accomplished young local voices — in St. John’s Thursday night.
The world-renowned King’s Singers sextet will join the choir for a concert, presented by The Telegram, at The Basilica starting at 7:30 p.m.
The King’s Singers were established in the late 1960s in England, with two dozen or so members coming and going since then, earning two Grammy Awards and other prestigious accolades.
The current members — Patrick Dunachie, Timothy Wayne-wright, Julian Gregory, Christopher Bruerton, Christopher Gabbitas and Jonathan Howard — perform concerts worldwide, with a repertoire that includes everything from religious music to Billy Joel.
Their latest recording is “Gold,” a three-disc set released last year in celebration of the group’s 50th anniversary.
The King’s Singers accepted Atlantic Boychoir’s invitation to perform together in St. John’s as part of the singers’ anniversary tour in North America.
The Atlantic Boychoir consists of about 50 male singers between age 8 and 22 from across the province. The choir was established in 2016 by Jakub Martinec and Jennifer Beynon-martinec, who founded the Czech Boys Choir before moving to St. John’s a few years ago when Jakub took up a position as director of choral studies at Memorial University.
Atlantic Boychoir has performed with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, completed a concert tour of Ontario and last month travelled to Europe for a Christmas concert tour of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.
The choir has been counting down the number of “sleeps” before its concert with the King’s Singers on its Facebook page.
There are less than 100 tickets left for the concert, including about a dozen VIP meet-andgreet tickets, which include premium seating and attendance at a private after-party.
