New superintendent of prisons announced
Don Roche named to lead adult corrections in Newfoundland and Labrador
Don Roche has been named the new superintendent of prisons for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Roche, who began his career in adult corrections in 1982, will replace Owen Brophy, who retired after more than 35 years of service in corrections.
The announcement was made in a news release from Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General Andrew Parsons on Thursday. Roche has previously worked at the St. John’s Lock-up and the Salmonier Correctional Institute, but spent the majority of his career at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP), where he served as a duty captain as well as a training captain.
“We are very fortunate to have Don Roche return to adult corrections,” Parsons stated in the release.
“His previous leadership experience within our prison system is extremely valuable as we move forward in our efforts to strengthen the justice system in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Roche was appointed assistant superintendent of operations at HMP in 2008 and retired in 2013 after more than 30 years of service.
His significant experience in training has provided mentorship and guidance in corrections across the province, Parsons stated.
He has been honoured with the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal, and was certified as a suicide intervention skills trainer and as a use-of-force instructor.
Roche will begin his new position on Feb. 1.
