Stunning image wins contest

Newfoundland landscape reflection claims top prize in Canadian Geographic photo competition

- BY CLARENCE NGOH

Michael Winsor has plenty to celebrate — his image was selected among many entries as the winner in the landscape category of Canadian Geographic’s photo contest.

The winning photo was taken in Barbour Living Heritage Village in Newtown, a location Winsor has photographed many times. Although Winsor said he is familiar with the area, this was the first time he composed the winning shot, titled “Evening Reflection.”

A keen visual eye, the picturesque view, timing and a bit of luck brought the necessary elements together to create an image judges selected above all others.

“The stillness was really calm, the calmest I ever saw,” said Winsor, referring to the glasslike reflection of the photo.

“It was a seven-second exposure and there was no blur on the boat, and that is really rare in Newfoundland.”

Winsor works as a full-time photographer, but says it does not feel like work when he heads out to create an image.

“It is something that I really like to do. It’s not work when you really enjoy doing something.”

Winsor estimates it has taken at least five years to reach a level where he can work as a professional photographer.

His advice for amateur photographers who wish to pursue the profession full time is to be patient.

“It takes time to find clients — it does not happen right away,” he said. “It takes years to develop a business and to do it full time.”

Winning this award has already generated more interest in his work, with potential clients already calling him.

Winsor has a website showcasing his work at www.michaelwinsor.ca.
