Two people have been displaced following an early Monday morning house fire on Cashin Avenue in St. John’s.

The fire was reported around 12:30 a.m. Monday and when firefighters arrived on the scene they found heavy smoke coming from the home, and located a fire in a room at the rear of the structure.

There were two units in the home. The male and female tenant from each unit, and some pets, were forced out of the building.

The woman could be seen on the front lawn of the home caring for one of her cats and some other pets in covered cages.

A next door neighbour also took a cat into her home after firefighters handed it over to her.

Platoon chief Rick Dehann of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department said firefighters were able to locate and put out the fire quickly, but not before

the room in question suffered extensive damage. The rest of the home had smoke and water damage.

The Canadian Red Cross

disaster volunteers assisted the two displaced residents with emergency lodging, food, clothing and other basic necessities.

The man lived in the apartment where the fire caused extensive damage. He was treated for smoke inhalation. Power to both units was cut and the woman’s apartment escaped fire damage, but did suffer smoke damage.
