Word was already out on Gerry Rogers’ candidacy for the NDP leadership, but she has now made it official — Rogers filed her nomination papers at the end of last week.

A filmmaker, small business owner and former social worker, Rogers has served in the House as MHA for St. John’s Centre since 2011.

“This is an exciting time for our party. I look forward to getting out and talking to party members, bringing in new members and sharing my vision for the future of our N.L. NDP,” she said in a statement issued Monday morning.

“This leadership campaign is an opportunity to show the people of the province that there is a place for them in our party, especially people who are disillusioned and looking for a better way of doing politics.”

Rogers said she is running for leader because she believes the NDP can build a party that is “resilient and energized.”

The new leader will be named during the NDP leadership convention April 6-8 in St. John’s. So far, Rogers is the only candidate in the race.

Former NDP leader Earle Mccurdy stepped down in September, and Lorraine Michael has since held the reins as interim leader.

Meanwhile, the Progressive Conservatives continue toward their own selection of a new leader, to replace interim leader Paul Davis on April 28.

There are two candidates in that race: Tony Wakeham and Ches Crosbie.
