Both candidates for the Newfoundland and Labrador Progressive Conservative Party leadership have expressed interest in one or more debates, ahead of final voting by party members and supporters.

On Tuesday morning, candidate Tony Wakeham issued a statement saying he has requested no less than four debates be arranged and scheduled before the start of voting in late March.

Party president Graydon Pelley said discussions are underway with media outlets, and the party is looking to have more information on any debate or debates for the public within the next week or so.

Asked about Ches Crosbie’s interest in a four-debate schedule, as Wakeham has proposed, the Crosbie camp said it wouldn’t be a problem, while noting decisions on debates are in the hands of the party.

The rules guiding the leadership race say candidates must participate in any debates, when scheduled as part of any all-candidates forum organized by the party, through its designated sub-committee.
