Couple wins lottery on son’s birthday
He buys them and she scratches them and wins.
Such was the case for Mount Pearl couple George and Karen Hickey on Feb. 7, the result being a $675,000 Set For Life win on their son Joshua’s 23rd birthday.
George purchased his lotto tickets for that Wednesday night’s draw at the Need’s Convenience store on First Street. George said he took advantage of the Set For Life promo, where you purchase four tickets and get a fifth one free.
They were in their living room watching TV when Karen scratched the tickets on an end table, saw the three “Set For Life” symbols in the block and realized they had won.
“I screamed, jumped for joy, cried and done my happy dance,” she says.
They opted to take the lump sum of $675,000 because “we’re not 25 anymore.”
They said they plan to pay off their mortgage with their windfall, and later go on a family cruise with their children.
George and Karen both work in the construction industry, and they said they plan to keep on
working and won’t retire just yet.
They were presented with their Valentine’s Day winnings at the Atlantic Lottery offices on
Hallett Crescent in St. John’s on Wednesday afternoon.
Karen said while cutting the lotto winner’s celebratory cake,
“I still got me card today, too,” sealing it with a kiss.
An extra-special Valentine’s Day family celebration was held at their home on Wednesday night.
