Maple Leafs, Blizzard in back-and-forth series

Western sweeps Tri-pen in other semifinal, but not before putting in some overtime

The St. John’s Maple Leafs and East Coast Blizzard have quite a series going in their Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League semifinals.

The Leafs and Blizzard are tied 2-2 in their best-of-seven series following a weekend split.

Meanwhile, the Western Kings completed a four-game sweep of the Tri-pen Osprey in Conception Bay North.

At the Goulds Arena, Regan Seymour scored twice as the Leafs got past the Blizzard 5-2 Sunday. Logan Brothers, Lucas Osmond and Nick Gosse added singles as St. John’s tied the series at a pair of games each. Sean Hickey potted both Blizzard goals.

Saturday, it was Jack Keough with a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Blizzard won 4-3. Kieran Burke and Nathan Kelly had the singles for the winners. Seymour, Nick French and Chris Martell replied.

The Kings completed their sweep with a 5-4 overtime win over the Osprey Saturday night at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts.

Noah Legge scored at 19:40 of the second overtime period. Malcolm Genge led the winners with two goals. Jacob Oake also scored. Luke Akerman had two goals and two assists in a losing cause. Singles came from Kyle Tetford and Josh Neil.

Friday night at the Danny Cleary Community Centre, Western thumped Tri-pen 9-0. Liam Smith fired three goals for the winners, and Kristopher Thomas and Malcolm Genge each had two. Adrian Ward and Skylar Coates added singles.
