Talking about the weather

- Cindy Day

Someone once said, “If it wasn’t for the weather, most Canadians couldn’t start a conversation.”

I’ve been talking about the weather in Atlantic Canada for almost 20 years now, and I’d like to keep that conversation going. On Tuesday, with the help of an amazing team of people here at Saltwire, we will unveil Weather by Day.

Weather by Day will be a compilation of daily, regional and local forecasts, marine weather, Grandma’s wisdom and some very cool photos from across the region and adorable drawings from our youngest audience. You’ll also find something new called Weather University, where together we can learn new things about the wonderful world of weather.

You’ll be able to access all of this information and more online by visiting the Weather page of your local publication or by visiting Weatherbyday.ca. There you’ll find my region-byregion video weather forecasts and analysis. Weather of the Day will also offer up some fun, including weather lore and fascinating photos.

Over the past couple of months many of you have been following my forecasts on social media and you’ve been telling me how much you enjoy reading the weather. I’m happy to report this will continue, and more. Monday through Saturday, readers can find my column, Grandma Says, daily readersubmitted weather snapshots, children’s artwork, weather explainers and seasonal features.

All that and more begins Tuesday, March 13 online and in print in The Chronicle Herald, The Cape Breton Post, The Truro Daily News, The New Glasgow News, The Guardian, The Journal-pioneer, The Telegram and The Western Star.

So, what “more” could there be? Well, that’s up to you.

While this is my forecast, it is our weather and I would like you to help me tell the story. One of the things I cherish the most is having you involved with the weather and I would like to continue to feature your fabulous photos. Please send them to Weathermail@weatherbyday.ca.

For the past 10 years, one of the highlights of my day was opening Weather Watcher mail and sharing the children’s magical depictions of weather with all of you. To that end, I will continue to feature a child’s drawing each day. If you have young ones under the age of 13, please encourage them to get out the crayons and start doodling. Please email the drawings to Weathermail@weatherbyday.ca.

This is just the beginning for us here at the Saltwire Network. With time and your valuable input, we will continue to evolve and enhance our weather offering so you can make it your go-to for all-things weather.

I’ve always believed that weather should be a joint effort. It’s something so many of us are passionate about … so let’s continue on this journey together.

Let your smile be your umbrella.
