Interest in true crime leads to podcast

Alicia Bishop and Andrea Bowen share an interest in true crime.

Little did they expect that interest to lead to them becoming hosts of a podcast discussing the subject. Their show, “Crime709,” focuses on a discussion of past Newfoundland and Labrador crimes.

Bowen said there isn’t another local podcast like it.

“There are a lot of true crime stories on the go, but I think this is different because it’s specifically Newfoundland and Labrador,” she said.

“We have a culture where we take pride in our own people. We’re excited to tell our stories, and this is a side of the story that people might be afraid to tell.”

The pair are co-workers at an airline, where they met.

Bishop said they decided on a podcast because it’s a format they enjoy.

“I just love everything podcast. You get to know people a little bit more through listening to people just talk together,” she said.

They’re hoping the podcast will be a conversation-starter, she said.

“We want it to be more conversational. Especially if it’s a cold case, we want people to start talking about it again. If someone is correcting us, then they’re still talking about it.”

It can also be a place for people to share information, Bishop said.

“It might give people a new

outlet. They can come to us if they have something they want to talk about.”

The pair always look for more ideas and welcome tips from listeners.

Bishop says she knows crime isn’t a topic for everyone.

“Probably, when people hear Crime709, they think it will be structured and driven. But no, it’s just us talking about this subject and enjoying it,” she said.

Bowen agrees they’re taking a lighter tone to a serious subject.

“Everything is very lighthearted and we’re constantly cracking jokes and being foolish with each other. It’s true crime, but with a light twist on it, so it’s not morbid,” she said.

In the two months since the show launched, they have created six episodes, each about an hour long.
