Newfoundland and Labrador’s entry, skipped by Diane Roberts from the Re/max Centre in St. John’s has won three of its first four games in the 2018 Everest Canadian senior women’s curling championship which began over the weekend in Stratford, Ont.

The Newfoundland rink, which also includes Heather Martin, Patricia Tiller and Candy Thomas, defeated Manitoba 6-5 Sunday afternoon and Nunanvut 8-2 later that night. The rink split two decisions — losing to British Columbia and defeating Northern Ontario — in its opening draws on Saturday.

The Roberts rink has a schedule of six preliminary-round games in the event, which sees 14 entries split into two pools.

The Mike Ryan rink from the Carol Club in Labrador City is the province’s representative in the national senior men’s event also being held in Stratford. Ryan and teammates Gary Wensman, Barry Edwards and Neil Peckham were still looking

for their first win four games into the championship.

One other national curling championship began over the weekend. That was the national university championships in Leduc, Alta., where Memorial University is competing in the women’s division. The Seahawks, skipped by Rebecca Roberts and including Chantal Newell, Lauren Barron and Stephanie Nadeau, had a 1-2 record after a 13-3 loss to Wilfrid Laurier University on Sunday.

The Roberts rink will play seven round-robin games in all, including a late Sunday-night matchup against Thompson Rivers, a British Columbia school.

Leduc is also site of the national wheelchair curling championship beginning today. In that event, Newfoundland is represented by a team from the Re/max Centre. Skip Cecilia Carroll delivers lead stones, with Darlene Jackman, who throws fourth stones, Mel Fitzgerald and Felix Green also on the team.
