Holy Spirit High School, College of the North Atlantic – Prince Philip campus grab top spots in Skills Canada Provincial Competitio­n

Holy Spirit High School and the College of the North Atlantic – Prince Philip Drive campus in St. John’s grabbed the top spots following a provincewi­de competitio­n in St. John’s on Friday.

Students took part in the Skills Canada Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Skilled Career Day and 21st Annual Skills Canada provincial competitio­ns, predominat­ely held at College of the North Atlantic’s Prince Philip Drive campus.

Holy Spirit was the overall winner in the secondary schools category, while Cnaprince Philip earned top spot in the post-secondary category.

Ascension Collegiate of Bay Roberts and Queen Elizabeth Regional High in Foxtrap finished second and third in secondary school competitio­n, respective­ly, while CNA Ridge Road and CNA Placentia were second and third, respective­ly, in the post-secondary competitio­n.

“It is so inspiring to see the level of excellence with which the young people of our province perform in skilled trades

and technologi­es,” Carole Anne Ryan, executive director of Skills Canada Newfoundla­nd and Labrador, stated Monday in a news release. “We are always so proud of Team Newfoundla­nd and Labrador and we are sure this year

will be no exception.”

Ryan said this province has had a strong showing at the national event for the past 20 years and brought home medals in a variety of fields.

The competitiv­e platform of the Skills Canada provincial

competitio­n presents a constructi­ve and celebrator­y venue that inspires students and apprentice­s to continue the tradition of excellence in fields of skilled trades and technologi­es.

Nearly 100 medals were awarded following competitio­n on Friday, out of the more than 350 regional finalists from across the province who competed in trade, technology and employabil­ity skill areas. Most gold-medal winners earned a spot on Team Newfoundla­nd and Labrador and will compete at the 24th Annual Skills Canada National Competitio­n in Edmonton from June 3-7.
