Holy Spirit High School and the College of the North Atlantic – Prince Philip Drive campus in St. John’s grabbed the top spots following a provincewide competition in St. John’s on Friday.
Students took part in the Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Skilled Career Day and 21st Annual Skills Canada provincial competitions, predominately held at College of the North Atlantic’s Prince Philip Drive campus.
Holy Spirit was the overall winner in the secondary schools category, while Cnaprince Philip earned top spot in the post-secondary category.
Ascension Collegiate of Bay Roberts and Queen Elizabeth Regional High in Foxtrap finished second and third in secondary school competition, respectively, while CNA Ridge Road and CNA Placentia were second and third, respectively, in the post-secondary competition.
“It is so inspiring to see the level of excellence with which the young people of our province perform in skilled trades
and technologies,” Carole Anne Ryan, executive director of Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador, stated Monday in a news release. “We are always so proud of Team Newfoundland and Labrador and we are sure this year
will be no exception.”
Ryan said this province has had a strong showing at the national event for the past 20 years and brought home medals in a variety of fields.
The competitive platform of the Skills Canada provincial
competition presents a constructive and celebratory venue that inspires students and apprentices to continue the tradition of excellence in fields of skilled trades and technologies.
Nearly 100 medals were awarded following competition on Friday, out of the more than 350 regional finalists from across the province who competed in trade, technology and employability skill areas. Most gold-medal winners earned a spot on Team Newfoundland and Labrador and will compete at the 24th Annual Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton from June 3-7.
