Labrador City murder victim identified
RNC seek public’s help with investigation
Police have identified the victim in Thursday’s homicide in Labrador City as 28-year-old Vincent Belanger Dompierre of Montreal.
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) patrol officers responded to a house on Pine Avenue around 3 a.m. Thursday after reports of two men involved in an altercation.
Dompierre was dead when police arrived.
Vincent Ward, 30, is charged with first-degree murder in Dompierre’s death, and investigators believe Dompierre and Ward knew each other. Ward appeared in provincial court in Wabush on Thursday afternoon and is currently in custody.
The RNC stated in a news release Sunday afternoon there is no threat to public safety.
Police said it’s unclear how long Dompierre was in Labrador City, and homicide investigators want to speak with anyone who may have had contact with him in recent weeks.
They said Dompierre, who was six-foot-six and 300 pounds, may have stood out to people in the community due to his size and stature.
RNC investigative teams from St. John’s and Corner Brook are in Labrador working with the office of the chief medical examiner to determine the cause of Dompierre’s death.
Police had previously said a firearm was involved.
Ward’s next court appearance is May 7 in Wabush.
