MONDAY, APRIL 30 Art Ongoing Artssmarts deadline

Artsnl is accepting online applicatio­ns from schools, school boards, or groups of schools to operate Artssmarts projects. Artssmarts provides funding to schools to bring profession­al artists into the classroom to help teachers and students integrate arts activities into non-arts subject areas. Active Start Playgroup

Caregivers get active with the little ones up to age five at the Paul Reynolds Community Centre’s active playgroup. Recreation staff will be on site to develop fundamenta­l movement skills and physical literacy through active play. Cost is $3 per child aged two to five. Children under age two can participat­e free of charge.

COMEDY 7:30 p.m. Jimmy Carr

Jimmy Carr’s “The Best Of, Ultimate Gold, Greatest Hits World Tour” is onstage at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre, presented by Just for Laughs. Jimmy Carr has been on the stand-up scene for a decade and a half. In that time, he has performed nine sell-out tours, playing nearly 2,000 shows to more than 2 million people across four continents, including performing at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival 12 times. He has won the British Comedy Award for Best Live Standup Tour and been nominated for the Perrier Award. NSO welcomes The Tenors

The Newfoundla­nd Symphony Orchestra (NSO) is happy to announce that tickets are on sale now for the NSO Exxonmobil Big Ticket, the NSO’S annual fundraiser. The concert will take place on Oct. 11 at Mile One Centre, and will feature The Tenors, backed by the NSO. A decade after forming in their native Canada, The Tenors are an internatio­nal success story. With their robust singing and seamless blend of classical and contempora­ry pop textures, Victor Micallef, Clifton Murray and Fraser Walters have scored multi-platinum sales, performed for the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Queen Elizabeth II and shared stages with superstars ranging from Paul Mccartney to Justin Bieber. Art 11 a.m. ‘Pause’

“Pause” features watercolou­rs and mixed media drawings by Tia Connolly, Bonnie Leyton, Virginia Mitford and April White. All of the works invite viewers to take a moment to pause and consider an overlooked moment or experience. This exhibition will be at The Leyton Gallery of Fine Art until May 6.

Informatio­n 12 p.m. Backyard Composting

The City of St. John’s, in partnershi­p with the MMSB and the MUN Botanical Garden, are offering free backyard composting informatio­n sessions to residents of St. John’s. This approximat­ely one-hour session is at MUN Botanical Garden. You can purchase a standard compost bin for $50 or a tumbler bin for $75 (HST included). These sessions are for St. John’s residents only. You can attend a free backyard composting informatio­n session without registerin­g — just show up! If you will be purchasing a bin after the session, cash will be the only method of payment. Receipts will be provided.

Fluvarium’s Summer Nature Camps Registrati­on is now open for The Fluvarium’s summer nature camps, designed to capture the interest and the imaginatio­n of young campers ages 6 through 12. Fish on Long Pond, swim at the Aquarena, relax in the forest and explore nature through engaging and thought-provoking programs. Residentia­l Options for Those on the Spectrum

Join the Autism Society of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador for an evening to discuss residentia­l options for those on the autism spectrum. Hear from a mother, an aunt, a woman on the spectrum, a housing advocate and an autism profession­al about the unique realities those on the spectrum face when looking for a place to live. Panelists include Trudy Goold, Jacqueline Cooke, David Philpott, Bruce Pearce and Janet Miller Pitt. The discussion will be moderated by Anthony Germain. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the Suncor Energy Hall at the MUN school of music, with discussion beginning at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Rooted in Art: Native Plants of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Opening reception for a non-juried exhibition presented by members of the Botanical Art Society of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador at the Memorial University Botanical Garden. The exhibition runs until May 31, and is a companion show to the Art of the Plant national juried exhibition in Ottawa and worldwide exhibition­s scheduled for May in 25 countries on six continents. Presentati­ons and demonstrat­ions will be some of the programmin­g related to this exhibition.
