Brad Gushue and his St. John’s rink finished off their 2017-18 curling season in fine style Sunday, defeating Ontario’s Glenn Howard 8-2 to win the Humpty’s Champions Cup in Calgary.

Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker were a perfect 7-0 in the competition, which featured 15 champions from events during the season.

It was Gushue’s 10th Grand Slam win of his career, and the result also means he has now won all seven events on the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling schedule: the Champions Cup — which only started in 2016 — was the last open checkmark on his list.

The rink won three of the seven Grand Slam events this

season, beginning with victories in the first two: the Tour Challenge in Regina, Sask. in September and Masters of Curling in Lloydminster, Alta., in October. They also were runners-up in the Elite 10 in March and semifinalists in the Players Championship earlier this month.

With that record, Gushue had arrived in Calgary having already claimed the Bonus Cup and $75,000 prize for most points this Grand Slam season.

It was all part of a busy season that also saw Gushue and Co. make it to the semifinals in the Olympic Trials, win their second straight Tim Hortons Brier Canadian men’s title and finished as runners-up in the world men’s championship in Las Vegas.
